How to find an article.

You are looking for an article, which uses the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) to find our something astrophysically interesting. You will not be able to use very recent data as they are proprietary, that is, they are not available to the public.

There are two methods of attack:

  1. Search ADS http://adswww.harvard.edu for the type of object your are interested in AND STIS.
  2. Search the HST archive data http://archive.stsci.edu for STIS and the type of object you are interested in. Be careful to search for the spectrograph NOT the imager! Then get the name of the proposer and search ADS to see where he/she published the results. Here is the search page

How to get data

The fastest way to retrieve your data is to:

Go to http://archive.stsci.edu/ for an introduction of what is available.

Go to search at http://archive.stsci.edu/hst/search.php    Make sure to mark ONLY STIS Spectrograph!

When you have found what you want mark them for retrieval.  Note you may not have all data displayed. You may have to change the maximum records option on your search.

Select your observations for retrieval, then click [Retrieve Marked Data]. This action will spawn another screen listing all of your marked datasets. Click on [Submit Request], which spawns the <Retrieval options which is a screen in which you enter your archive username and password and specify the means and delivery location for your data. USE HOST to put it in a staging area on a public site on archive.stsci.edu for subsequent downloading to their own machines via FTP (HOST).
Click on [Send retrieval] once more, and your data are on their way. I will receive an E-mail message when the retrieval request has been queued, and another when it has been completed. I will forward the latter to you.
