Research Interests At the fundamental level, the theory of the strong interaction is believed to be Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). In the energy range below approximately 20 GeVthe region of quark confinementthe interaction is so strong that perturbation theory is not applicable. In this energy region, QCD has thus far provided only very limited insight into the nature of hadronic interactions and of the structure of hadrons in general. Therefore, major experimental and theoretical efforts are underway in order to answer important open questions in this energy domain. One such effort at the Thomas Jefferson National Laboratory involves the study of the structure of the nucleon and its excitation modes (resonances). This is done by exciting the nucleon electromagnetically and analyzing its decay into a meson and a nucleon. Such processes are also suited for studying the corresponding meson-nucleon interaction at short distances. Complementary to the electromagnetic probe, one may scatter hadrons from nucleons to produce mesons and this is being done at European facilities. We are currently involved in the study of meson production off nucleons using both electromagnetic and hadronic probes. From these studies we expect to extract information, not only on the structure of the nucleon and its resonances, but also on short-range hadron dynamics. Recent Publications K. Nakayama, H.
