Research Interests: In my Ph.D research I simulate the propagation of high intensity ultrashort laser pulses through a variety of nonlinear optical materials and systems. These simulations are used for prediction of and comparison with laboratory results as well as theoretical investigation into many nonlinear optical effects and ultrashort pulse processes. Processes that interest us are catastrophic self-focusing, linear and nonlinear shock, stimulated Raman scattering, multiphoton absorption, laser-induced plasma generation, optical breakdown, and in particular the effect of beam/pulse asymmetries on the above mentioned phenomenon. Using beam, pulse, and phase profiles of real pulses measured in the lab (see Sebastian Winkler) we can digitally reconstruct fully three dimensional pulses for our simulations. In doing this we hope to gain a more detailed and fundamental understanding of our experimental results. Recent Publications: Jeremy R. Gulley, Sebastian W. Winkler, and William M.
